GREETINGS!!!

Welcome to the blog for our English 100 course! This blog will have everything you need for this course: the syllabus, readings, handouts, assignment descriptions, and other wonderful resources.

WHAT TO DO HERE...

Each week you must reply to the blog for the week. It will be titled Week One, Week Two, and so on. At the end of the week(Sunday evening), I'll record who responded, so you won't be able to go back and make up your responses from previous weeks. Remember, the point is to begin to write as a habit...The best way to exercise this new habit is to overdo it. Don't just respond. Instead, respond, then wait, then respond to someone's response. Turn it into a dialogue. This is non-graded writing. But it still matters. Do too much. Be obnoxiously verbose!

(April 24) -- A homeless man who was stabbed while saving a woman from a knife-wielding attacker lay dying in a pool of his own blood for more than an hour while several New Yorkers walked past without calling for help.

Surveillance video obtained by the New York Post shows that some passers-by paused to gawk at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax early Sunday morning and yet kept on walking.

One man came out of a nearby building and took a cellphone photo of the victim before leaving. Another leaned over and vigorously shook the dead man before walking away. But most people never stopped.

Firefighters arrived more than an hour and 20 minutes after Tale-Yax collapsed. By that time, the 31-year-old was dead.

"They needed to help and call the police. I don't get it," resident Ramon Bellasco, 46, told the Post.

The incident happened at 7:21 a.m. almost a week ago at 88 Road and 144th Street in the borough of Queens, but police didn't have a clear idea of what happened until recently.

Tale-Yax is seen on the grainy video approaching a man who was threatening a woman with a knife. The man turned and stabbed Tale-Yax but most of the action is out of the security camera's field of vision. Both the stabber and the woman then fled in different directions and Tale-Yax stumbled a few paces before collapsing face-down on the sidewalk.

Within a minute or so, the first of a long series of people begins walking by Tale-Yax without going to his aid.

Police told the Post they received four 911 calls at around the time of the attack reporting a woman screaming, but found nothing. They said they received no other 911 calls.

The incident is reminiscent of the rape and murder of Kitty Genovese, also in Queens, in 1964. In that case, dozens of people witnessed some or all of the attack and yet no one did anything to stop it.

No arrests have been made in the latest slaying, and police have been unable to identify the woman Tale-Yax was trying to help.

  1. WOW!!!!! this is a real sad story!
there arent many of us out there that would do something like for a stranger. All the people that just walked by the wounded body obviously dosent care about a stranger unless it was them or a family member. in my case if that was me walking by the wounded body, the least i would have done would be to report the crime or atleast het him to a hospital.
when something like this happens you shouldn't stay with your arms crossed, always try to help out.=]

  2. ALL THE PEOPLE WHO PASSED BY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.I THINK THEY ALL RESPONDED TO HIM THE WAY THEY DID BECAUSE THEY ARE PROBABLY USED TO SEEING DEAD BODIES OR PEOPLE LYING AROUND LIKE THAT EVERYDAY.THEY PROBABLY DID NOT WANT TO REPORT IT IN SINCE HE WAS HOMELESS,OR THEY DID NOT WANT TO BE THE ONES CAUGHT UP IN THE MIX OF THE CRIME. THE LEAST THEY COULD OF DID WAS CALL FOR HELP BECAUSE I WOULD NOT WANT TO BE LEFT FOR DEAD IF THAT WAS ME,HOMELESS OR NOT.

  3. This is a sad story more sad that no one wanted to help the guy. The people that past by when he was just laying there should feel bad and ashamed, just to know that they seen the poor guy and did nothing about it.I would of felt really bad if I would of pass throw the and didn't do nothing about it.In the poor guy was a brave guy to help a lady he didn't even know . Everyone should always try to help others in whatever they can. Just a little help could mean a lot to a person.

  4. the people who passed by should have noticed that there was something wrong yes there are lots of homless in big cities like New York but it should have been obvious that somethi9ng was wrong witht hte man and the people that stopped and checked on him should be held responsible for just leaving him there to die.

  6. i think that it was because it was a homeless man. i think that the people should have done something for the man. he was a homeless but he is still a person. New York is big but people should know that there was something wrong with the man. i think that people should have done something for the man because he did something for someones.people that let him just die so see that they could have saved someone even if the did not know the person.Everyone should try to help others out when they can.

  7. Well, i feel a lot of things could have been going through the minds of the passerbys. Since no one except the assualter and initial victim saw what really happened, the passerbys could have been afraid. It could have been drug related or gang related and may have been fearful to go around the person. The question why? could have been circulating through their heads. I hate to think that people have lost their sense of compassion to help one another, even in the means of death. This situation happened at a hospital on the East Coast with nurses and security! It makes me wonder what the heck is going on with people these days. Personally i came across this situation in Bakersfield. It was about 4 years ago, or so, on columbus and university. I was driving from my parents home to my fiances home. I barely passed the stop sign at this intersection, and as i did i saw clothes in the gutter and blood all over. I saw a head coming out of the this bright neon blue jog suit. I immediately stopped, and jumped into assessing this person. I was checking for a pulse, and when i did, i remember all this blood coming out of his mouth and nose. He was snoring, knocked out. He was laying flat on his face in the gutter with water running into his face. I was trying to call from my cell phone while helping this guy, and luckly a passerby stopped. I told her to call 911 and keep her kids inside their vehicle. This guys head was bashed up. I was somewhat thinking why is this white guy laying here in the gutter at an alley entrance known for gang and drugs. There have been murders, stabbings, shootings and kidnappings in this complex. I started looking on his back for any wounds, making sure the blood wasn't coming from anywhere else noticeable. How he was laying was somewhat questionable as to how he got in this position. He had his wallet, in his back pocket with usual cards and money, and i looked at the edge of the sidewalk, it was steep but falling down and landing face down with his arms tucked tight on the side of his body, it didn't fit. But all this was racing so fast. I was being asked by the operator questions like did he have a pulse, was he awake and so on. He had a pulse but was not awake. Well out of no where he lifted his head and saw his eye look up at me, i saw his other eye was exposed and cut and his right jaw was missing tissue, it was bone and teeth and blood. I yelled for the klids to get inside because was fighting me, trying to get up, but i knew i had to keep him flat because of possible neck or spinal injury. The operator instructed we keep his head down like we found him and hold him down. He became overpowering me, so the mother had to get down and hold his right side while i tried holding his left side and his head down. Finally the fire department came...well it took 5 firefighters, a male paramedic and myself to hold this guy down. They were saying either he was in huge shock or on some type of drug. I was given water to wash his blood off my arms and hands. Then they left to kmc. It wasnt after that i wondered woah, i had been exposed to lots of blood, some very minor scrapes from the gravel and my weight and his struggling. I thought od stds or aids. Ive been tested a couple times, especially since ive exposed my hands in blood while working in pathology, thankfully everythings been negative. Anyhow, i know this was supposed to be short, but i thought id share a personal experience, and what someone may have been thinking. I could see why someone in my situation may have passed by, which i know they did, simply on the basis of the neighborhood. Anyways...

  8. I think that I would call police. The person who took picture had a phone so there was no excuse they were not in isolated place with no way to communicate. I think they just not want to get involved. The appropriate thing would be to call 911 even if anonymous and not take picture.

  9. WOW!!!seriously, no one had the nerve to check on the guy....what a shame for those people jst passing by with no sense of mind that the guys was badly hurt and yet only a few checked on the guy, but didnt call 9-11....i say its greed, those people did what they did becuase they had to intention of helping a person lying on the sidewalk...i bet those people who passed by earlier that morning and watch the news feel really horrible of themselves because tney think he was just sleepin like there was no tomorrow!!shame, shame....all the people who passed by should be arrested for not doing anything!!!

  10. I believe that today's society has such a selfish attitude. The majority of people put themselves first, and only are willing to help others when they will reap some kind of reward. The people in this story illustrate this point. What would they get for helping some homeless bum? Each person that passed the man, made a decision that he was not worth their time or energy. That it was more of a hassle to stop and help him, so they decided just to walk on by. I can't imagine how you could walk bye someone regardless of any type of circumstance without even being willing to call for help. I believe these people should have made a call for help and should have stayed with the man until help arrived.
