The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had the means, time, influence and educational advantages, but what he will do with the things he has.

[T]he tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn't a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream...It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is sin.

WEDNESDAY IN CLASS Journal Writing Assignment:
ReplyDelete1. You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German poet, novelist, playwright, scientist and philosopher (1749-1832)
2. Our duty is to be useful, not according to our desires, but according to our powers.''
— Henri F. Amiel, Swiss writer (1821-1881)
1. You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him means when that man sees somebody that needs a helping hand and he just keep on going on with his life instead of stopping and asking or lending a hand.
2. Our duty is to be useful, not according to our desires, but according to our power means yes, everybody can desire something but if you don’t have the power to pursue that desire than what is the use. And I think that power is self confidence. Also, if you have self confidence then you can pursue any desire that you have set for yourself.
The similarities between the two is the useful of there characters. The reason why is because they both are pertaining to being selfish. The first one its like if they don’t do anything for you then you want do anything for them. The second one you basically have to put your self fist for a little bit in order to succeed.
The differences between the two is the first one to me is very like if you see somebody trip and fall and you just keep on walking, not even help them up. The reason why you didn’t help them is because you say I didn’t make them fall so why should I help them. You should always give a helping hand; you should always give before you receive. The second one I feel is more based on self confidence. The reason why I say that is because I feel people that have self confidence can be useful in all type of ways.
Both of these quotes I believe pertains to everyone life because you can just look around the room that you’re standing in and find somebody that’s treats those who can do nothing for him disrespectful and you can also find somebody that are very useful because they have a lot of self confidence.

Our duty is to be useful, not according to our desires, but according to our powers.''
— Henri F. Amiel, Swiss writer (1821-1881)
The first quote is written by Benjamin Elijah Mays who was an American educator and president of Morehouse College. It basically means that tragedy in life which also could be seen as failing in life is not when you set a goal and don’t reach it, but instead not setting a goal at all. There is nothing wrong to die with a mind full of dreams and a goal unfulfilled but is a calamity not to dream...and to die with no goals set! There is nothing wrong at all in aiming for the stars with your goal and not to reach it but it is a disgrace to not set a goal and have nothing to aim for or stars to reach for. So to conclude this quote Failure can be accepted as you had a goal and a plan but just did not reach it not trying or attempting a goal cannot be accepted. You should aim high not low as it is a sin. The second quote was written by Henri F. Amiel a Swiss writer. His quote is short and sweet but makes you think when you read it. The meaning it has is that each and everyone was put on this earth for a reason, with all different sets of abilities” or so called powers”. He suggests that they should use their existing abilities and powers to be useful in this world. Rather than using desire by longing and hoping for something to happen. They need to make it happen by using there abilities given to them and pursuing a goal.
These two quotes share a few similarities and differences. For example those who do not set goals most likely have many desires. They would like things to happen but have no strive and are not willing to use their abilities to obtain them, which is why they will always stay a desire and an unset goal. Where as those who manage to use their set abilities given use them to reach goals and tasks they have made. It seems that those who use abilities given to them in life to the fullest are the ones who are successful and reach goals they have set, where those who desires more then they have been given aren’t necessarily unsuccessful but don’t really set goals and wish more than putting a plan in action. Each of these quotes pertains to life in many ways it is key to use your abilities given to you in the real world. No one has the exact same abilities; therefore there is always a job or tasks for each person. So instead of desiring to find your calling you need to be persistent on using and improving your abilities to find that calling. It is also hard to be successful with out a plan, and that is why goals are set to guide you on the right path or so that you can slowly in steps reach a goal of your interest. Failing to use your abilities, set goals and dream could ultimately lead to failure or a boring life.
Quotes three and four are fairly similar in a sense that they imply how society segregates themselves with money and prestige. They express that people should blur the gaps and help others no matter what backgrounds they may have. Mabee’s quote is directed to the people who use the excuse that they simply do not have the power or the prestige to ever make a difference. He quotes that everyone should do their part to help with whatever they have. Amiel’s is to a more general audience, expressing that everyone must use the resources they have, not for their own wishes but for the better of the people. A single mother may not have the time to volunteer, but she can hold the door for someone. Office workers may not have a lot of money to donate, but they can have a recycle bin and sent the money to charity. A rich man can donate to an organization not only for the tax cut, knowing that people are helping others with that money. It’s a combination of both big and little things that people can do to cause a positive domino affect on society.

If you have time today to do something you plan to do tomorrow do it today because life is full of surprises that you never know what could happen tomorrow.

This quote, meaning that if you don’t have no goals in life, no dream to reach life won’t bring you anything good because you don’t know what you want from it. To become some one in life you need goals and dreams to be able to accomplish them. To reach the starts is to get everything you want in life.
These quotes are similar because if we don’t have plans in life we don’t success in it. Having a dream, a goal, or something to reach for life will bring us a lot of opportunities because we know what we want in life. So we don’t wait for things to be done the next day if they could be done today. For example, to be successful we need to take a step ahead of our plans.

This first quote speaks in many levels. Not only can this be tied into the fact that actions speaks louder then words but also that the actions of ones self can be determined by not speaking at all. In many sense this is true. A true gentle heart will treat a complete stranger as a loved one or a close friend even without knowing their name. That is to say that that person won’t ever mistreat their loved ones. It amazes me how some people will mistreat those who are less fortunate with harsh misjudgment and think of them as no one. A true stranger will not do anything for you but what would happen if they did? It just shows that that person has a pure heart and will do the best for their human kind. For an example I saw a video in the news where this man was trying to protect a woman who was being robbed, a total stranger to him and it cost him his life. She never did anything for him; he didn’t even know her but his character was one of those who protect his man kind. For that he has the noblest of hearts. His actions to someone who couldn’t do anything for him showed to the rest if the viewing world that he is the kind of person who people want to be around with. That the man that gave his life and everything in this power to protect her was not of desire to be crowned the hero of the day but of the duty to protect her and insure she is safe.
The second quote I chose has many similarities to the first one I chose. This quote speaks especially to me because every last word is true. I am a firm believer that we are in this world for a reason. Those reasons are to improve the life around us and to take advantage to be useful to the people around us with the ideas and the motives for better living. Sometimes what one person desires the most isn’t what it is best for the next person. Is the duty for human kind to be gentle and kind hearted everyone and to do anything within our power to ensure the safety and well being of the people we share our world with. For an example the man that helped the women from being robbed, he had the power to help save her life and he did it. The attacker was threatening her with a knife and he, he alone saved that woman’s life and she meant nothing to him. After a while after the man was killed he stumbled on the floor and died on the pavement. After a while you start to see walking by and starting at the poor man. None of these people call the police or even phantoms the idea to help. It was their desire not to help him; they probably thought it wasn’t their duty. They never did anything in their power to find out what happened they just kept walking. It shows what kind of character they were. They treat him like a nobody because he never did anything for them. It is sad really because they will never get to see that his character was one of the kindest hearts because he gave his life for a complete stranger.

The first quote means that we have to be use the power that we have and not the power that we don’t have. The second one means that if you don’t have any reason in life, then there is no point for you to live. There are some similarities in these two quotes and some different. The main similarity that they have is the fact that you have to want something in life to get it. That a person has to work for what he or she wants in life and the things that person has in his or her hands. The main differences in the two quotes would be that the first one is talking about power, and the second one is talking about life in general. The other differences in that the second quote talking about religion at the end and the first one does not talk about religion at all. This illustrate that people have to work hard go get their dreams and what they want to get in life. That the person has to want to live, because if you don’t there is not point to live life.
