GREETINGS!!!

Welcome to the blog for our English 100 course! This blog will have everything you need for this course: the syllabus, readings, handouts, assignment descriptions, and other wonderful resources.

WHAT TO DO HERE...

Each week you must reply to the blog for the week. It will be titled Week One, Week Two, and so on. At the end of the week(Sunday evening), I'll record who responded, so you won't be able to go back and make up your responses from previous weeks. Remember, the point is to begin to write as a habit...The best way to exercise this new habit is to overdo it. Don't just respond. Instead, respond, then wait, then respond to someone's response. Turn it into a dialogue. This is non-graded writing. But it still matters. Do too much. Be obnoxiously verbose!

WEEK SEVEN BLOG

Stephen Ahle, the principal at Pacific Rim Elementary, said grading is much more sophisticated than it used to be. Every aspect of grading – from the language used to the teacher's tone and the color of ink used to make corrections – leaves a psychological imprint on students, he said. "I tell teachers to use more neutral colors – blues and greens, and lavender because it's a calming color," he said. "And, of course, kids also like purple because it's the color of Barney."

Does it hurt your feelings when teachers use red pens?

  2. The color red is the color the stands out in a essay paper beacause you could see all the corrections on it. It doesnt really hurt my feelings because that tells me that I need to work on somethings in my paper.

  3. I don't mind now about red. I like red, blue something bright that stands out. I like my papers marked like crazy, it betters my writing. But i could understand the color having emotional ties with the student, especially children. Red=bad. I remembered a lot of students used to dread the red pen, so did i, even at the beginning of high school. Using a different color did help, because i remember the female teachers using that technique. It didn't make such a negative or resentful impact on the students. But today, i want my papers in red or blue. That way i will clearly see it and not over looking a warm neutral peaceful color.

  4. The focus is because so the children will not feel sad about being wrong. The red only hurts feelings when there is to much. I no like to see my papers all in red but it help me to make corrections.

  5. Personally I do feel bad when a teacher marks up my paper. I feel horrible and that maybe my hard work was not good enough. But i learened that everyone learns from mistakes, so over the years I learned not to take it personally. The teachers are getting paid so WE can learn how to write good and how to learn to put our ideas on paper.
I think that the focus on colors has a lot to do with self-esteem. Am not saying it low self esteem or high but I do understand that colors do have effects on people. The color red is strong and throughout our years it has been thought to us that the colors red means bad. In a way I agree that teachers should start marking up papers with blue or purple pens but with the conditon that it"ll be used only in the early years of elementry and jr. high. I believe that teachers in highschool should start using the red pen so they can better prepare the student for college.

  6. This has got to be the dumbest thing that I have ever read. Who can get their feelings hurt by red ink? Simply using red ink to grade papers is standard and has no emotion. Red ink is not trying to tell kids that they suck, but that they made an error and they need to correct it. Red is bold and easier to catch than a blue or purple. This says that kids today are coddled way to much. Teachers do not care whether are not they are popular, but rather than their students understand and can apply the material. The principal is a complete moron and should spend more time in a classroom rather than his office.

  7. Red is a good color to make corrections with for the reason that it stands out and very clearly shows where errors are located throughout your essay. Errors that should immediately be corrected, as opposed to other various colors which would not stand out so much.

  8. Regardless of the color, the grade or the comments on the paper make more of an impact. The only reason I could think of where a red pen is a bad idea, is if the teacher used a color grading system. Where students with a D or lower would get a red mark up and students with higher grades would have a black or blue markup. Other than this though, the color of the pen doesn't make much of a difference.

  13. people shouldn't cared of the colors. Colors are simple colors, therefore they won't harm anyone. people now use colors to offend others or to bang.
